Martin Looking at NFL Team Ownership

MartinAs running back Curtis Martin announced his retirement at the team’s headquarters in Manhattan, he did give some insight as to possible future endevors.  At a news conference yesterday as reported by Dennis Waszak, Jr. of AOL Sports, Martin hinted that he may want to look at ownership of an NFL team.

Martin was hoping to be able to divulge specific plans for life after football but hasn’t finalized anything as of yet.  He stated in the news conference, “Football has the greatest fan base of any sport.  With fan base comes influence, and with influence comes responsibility. My whole career has been about maintaining that responsibility as a player.  I believe in using football as a vehicle to reach out and do some good in society within the team and to individual lives.  Ownership is a larger way of continuing what I have already started.”  Martin also said that an announcement was imminent, but declined to go into any specifics.

It looks like Martin will probably “huddle up” with some major investors and approach NFL teams that are looking to possibly sell their franchise.  Considering Martin’s personal wealth and net worth, I’d say that his participation would be as a minority owner.  I obviously do not know what degree Martin received from UCLA but for his benefit, a business major will come in real handy.  As an ex-player he does bring intangibles to any meeting with potential investors and current NFL team owners.  But only time will tell and his announcement in the very near future should clarify everything.
