Pennington Struggles, Jets Beat up by Vikings 37-20

The Jets are hoping that QB Chad Pennington just had his worst game of the season, as Friday night vs the Minnesota Vikings was one of the worst games in memory for the veteran Jets signal caller. “About the only good thing that came out of tonight is that it didn’t count,” Pennington said. The Jets QB threw two picks that were returned for scores as the Vikings rolled over the Jets 37-20 at the Meadowlands. Pennington finished 7-of-10 for 40 yards for the Jets, but despite holding the ball for all but :58 seconds of the first quarter, threw two pick-six to Vikings Darren Sharper and Chad Greenway. After the quarter, the Jets were behind 14-3.

“I told them after the game that if anybody has the impression that this is OK because it’s preseason, they’re wrong,” coach Eric Mangini said. This was the true debut for Pennington, who only handed off last week vs Atlanta. This week, when putting the ball up, it was anyone’s guess where it would end up. “I just lost sight of Sharper,” Pennington said of his first pick. “It was one of those things where you’d like to have a string on the football so you could have that one back.”

After getting pressured two series later, Pennington again threw a pick that went the other way, as Greenway picked off a pass that went 16 yards the other way for the score. “I’d just throw it at Leon’s feet and live to see another down,” Pennington said what he should have done. “Anytime you’re under pressure like that, you don’t want to make something bad into something worse.”

It was one of those nights for the Jets, who in the end fumbled four times, losing one that went for a score, and throwing three picks that led to 14 Vikings points. In all, your looking at three turnovers for 21 Vikings points that led to the 37-20 loss. “Whenever you turn the ball over, it’s hard to win, especially when you play a good defense like Minnesota,” running back Leon Washington said.
