Defense Falls Apart in 38-31 Loss to Bengals

New York Jets quarterback Chad Pennington (10) and fullback Darian Barnes, left, congratulate each other after a 57 yard touchdown pass against the Cincinnati Bengals in the first quarter of an NFL football game, Sunday, Oct. 21, 2007, in Cincinnati.

This one can’t be blamed on Chad Pennington.  The Jets had the Bengals on the ropes Sunday, nursing a 23-10 lead in the third quarter, but that was when the defense folded, allowing little regarded Bengals back Kenny Watson to go off for three scores and 130 yards as the Bengals came out on top 38-31 win at Paul Brown Stadium.  Watson, the 7th year back playing for the injured Rudi Johnson, ran for the 130 yards on 31 carries.  He scored on runs of 1 and two yards in the second half, helping the Bengals overcome the 13-point third quarter deficit.

Trailing 20-10 at the half and 23-10 in the third quarter, the Bengals woke up on both sides of the ball, and outscored the Jets 28-8 to end the contest to improve to 2-4.  The Jets, who made the playoffs as a wild card last year, drop to 1-6.  They were 10-6 last season.  Carson Palmer threw for 226 yards on 14-for-21 passing.  The threw a TD to TJ Houshmandzadeh and three passes to Chad Johnson for 102 yards.

The Jets had a productive day from Pennington, and were let down by the defense in this one.  Pennington went 20-for-31 for 272 yards and three TD’s with a pick.  The Jets offense ended the day with 342 yards, but their defense faltered, allowing 395 yards and 28 second half points.

Cincinnati had its best day on the ground in a long time, rushing for 177 yards on 41 carries, a 4.3 yards per carry average.  The Jets with Thomas Jones ran for just 84 yards, with Jones going for 67 yards on 19 carries.  Next week the Jets host the Buffalo Bills at the Meadowlands.
