Pennington Easily Winning QB Battle Over Clemens so Far

Pennington ahead of Clemens

As far as the Jets QB battle is concerned, so far it’s been a rather lopsided battle to say the least.  Chad Pennington, one of the most fiesty players you’ll ever see when it comes to being in a battle, has been better in each and every practice to date.  When it comes to QB match ups, the score right now is Chad 6 – Kellen Clemens 0.

Reports say that Clemens, who it appears is the coaches choice to start, still looks uncomfortable in the pocket.  The QB has thrown a pick during 11-on-11 drills in each of the first four days of practice.  Pennington hasn’t been great, but he’s yet to throw an interception, putting him ahead of the curve right there.

“The one mistake you can’t have is you can’t turn the ball over,” said coach Eric Mangini about the QB battle. “Quarterbacks need to make good decisions in those risk/reward (situations) we talk about.”  In other words, make better decisions Kellen, or your going to find yourself holding a clipboard at the start of the season.

“I come out to practice every day with two or three things I want to improve on and so far I’ve been making progress,” said Clemens. “To me, that’s very important. We’ve been moving the ball and having some good things (happen). We obviously have some things we need to work on both as an offense and a team.”

The coaches insist that Clemens is on track, and that they still feel he will reach that potential they feel he’s had from day one.  Problem is, he’s not showing it to anyone else, and it looks as if he were in there in a pressure situation today he’d be eaten alive.

So while it’s early, you can bet that Chad is similing ear to ear.  He’s been told for the past few years that he’s on the verge of being replaced, but always in the end has been able to fight off the challenge.  Based on the first few days of camp, it sure looks as if it’s going to be that way again in 2008.
