Where Will Pennington’s Career Continue?

Pennington

The career of Chad Pennington as a New York Jet is all but over, as the QB is going to be released after the blockbuster deal to get Brett Favre early Thursday morning. Pennington is going to have options, and there are a number of teams that right away will be interested in his services. Here is a breakdown of those teams that would look at Pennington for a role on their roster:

Minnesota – The Vikings couldn’t get Favre, but may take a flyer on Pennington, who wouldn’t have to contend with the conditions playing at Giants Stadium. Tarvaris Jackson is the undisputed number one for the Vikings, but Pennington could fill a nice role as a backup and insurance policy if Jackson goes down or doesn’t play well.

Chicago – The Bears will have their eyes on all QB’s with a name that hit the market this summer, and it comes to no surprise that Pennington will get some interest. For now the team is still under the assumption that either Rex Grossman or Kyle Orton will start the year, but adding Pennington to the mix would make for some good competition.

Detroit – See a trend here? All NFC North teams so far on the list, and the Lions are for a reason. Jon Kitna is getting up there in years, and while Pennington is no spring chicken, the team would like to have another solid backup behind Kitna in case current backup Drew Stanton has a relapse or can’t cut it as the teams starter. Again playing in a dome would be a good fit for Pennington.

Atlanta – We all know that the future for the Falcons is Matt Ryan, but putting Pennington under center for one year would give the team time to let Ryan sit back and watch, much like Carson Palmer did with the Bengals. Pennington would be an upgrade to current backups Chris Redman and Joey Harrington.

Miami – Seems like the Fins are not sold on who their starter will be this season, and Pennington again would add a sense of competition to the battle between John Beck, Josh McCown and Chad Henne. If nothing else, he is a guy that can compete with those three, and possibly would make a good backup if things in South Florida go badly at the start of the year.
