Jets Win Battle of New York 10-7

The biggest story of the night for Jet fans were all the penalties. 10 of the 12 penalties on the Jets came from on the offensive side of the ball. Understandable when a new QB comes in half way through camp and the entire team is still adjusting. Maybe next week the starting offense can play a series or two just to get cadences, motions, and reads down before week one starts. I am sure Mangini will be all over this in practice this week and next.

Jets Offense

Thomas Jones for a second consecutive year doesn?t have that burst or field vision that Leon Washington has. You can see the difference when Washington has the rock compared to Thomas Jones. Jones continued to have his 2, 3, and 4 yard carries looking like he did last year going 6 for 11 yards (1.8 yard average per carry).

On a third and one the Jets went four wide and Farve hit T. Jones for the first down but Jones went backwards to elude a tackle and lost the first down. Washington had a burst up the middle for 8+ yards with good movement from the offensive line and also looked quick on screen passes out of the backfield. Penalties killed momentum but didn?t hinder expectations as the offense showed signs of explosiveness. Farve continues to make strides with Jerrico Cotchery and Dustin Keller as these two seemed to be his go to guys.

Cotchery is clearly the number one (Coles missed another game with his unhealed broken heart) and Keller is the TE bail out guy that Farve loves to go to while under pressure. Offensive coordinator B. Shottenheimer did a nice job with mis-directions, fake draws, screen passes, and bootlegs to keep the Giant front four honest. Coming into the game one of the biggest concerns was the rebuilt offensive line vs. the Giants defensive line that a game before knocked out Derek Anderson of the Browns (plus what they did in the post season and Super Bowl last year). Besides the penalties I gave the line a solid B on there performance.

The Jets offense showed four and sometimes five wide (empty back field) on short yardage situations. On one of those occasions Farve hit Brad Smith for 30 yards only to be negated by a penalty. Farve even tucked the ball and ran for a first down on one play. Brad Smith seems to have locked up the third wide receiver spot and had some nice looks.

Brett Ratcliff threw and interception that appeared to be a hot read that TE J. Pociask didn?t recognize but he came back the next series to go 2 for 2 for 51 yards for the go ahead and winning touchdown to last weeks goat and this weeks hero Paul Raymond. TE Pociask also rebounded for a 27-yard catch that set up the winning TD pass to Raymond.

Defense= K. Jenkins had a tackle for loss and Calvin Pace got a coverage sack while K. Rhoades safety blitz helped the Jets defense go seven plays and out during the first set of downs. Giant WR?s A. Toomer and Hixon did combine for two nice caches for 13 and 22 yards during the first drive. David Harris had a sack and D. Lowery continued to shine as he had a nice open field tackle on a screen pass to B Jacobs to hold the Giants to a punt when they started in good field possession. Lowery also knocked down a pass on a blitz. A few plays later he let up a first down pass to S Smith for 12 yards. Lowery is making a case to start opposite of D. Revis as David Barrett got beat a couple times and J Miller was lost in the second quarter with a foot issue. The team combined for 8 sacks. Both V. Gohlston and C. Pace got beat on run plays that bounced to the outside but both showed good pass rushing skills.

Special Teams = The kick off coverage unit is still yielding big returns and as a result opponents have been starting off with good field position. Giants punter J. Feagles shut down the punt return game with consistent kicks out of bounds with no opportunity for returns.

One day while riding my big wheel 5 miles from my boyhood home, someone asked me…Hey Larnie, where are you going?

    Fishing, I replied…

Thats when I knew I was different.
