A Show of Good Faith…now Lets Pay ‘Em

I still stand by my earlier posting that we should pay Leon Washington over Thomas Jones but it is a rare thing in the NFL to see players make the first move of “good faith.” I appreciate that as a fan.

I recall when former Jets QB Chad Pennington took a pay cut just to be reunited with now Cincinnati Bengals WR Laveranues Coles. I was floored by the gesture that a QB and friend would take for a fellow teammate amid all the selfishness we hear of at this time of year.

We all understand that the NFL is a business. We should be in the business of keeping and retaining our players that work hard. In my opinion, Mangini had many flaws as a coach, but one thing I admired was his focus on “character” guys to draft and put on the Jets roster.

The actions by Leon Washington and Thomas Jones prove that football, and the team winning means a lot to them. Of course money will always play a role, and they will make tons more than me as a teacher but I respect their profession and nobody pays to watch me teach or take a beating Monday through Friday.

Show these green guys the green!

This is not good faith at all. Since they are already under contract, there choice is to either rejoin the team or not play at all. Both of them were greedy, by wanting more money. If they were in good faith, they would have never held out in the first place.

The common argument from the common man, usual stuff from the usual suspects… In the NFL contracts are not guaranteed, you have to get the money while you can. If the teams make “business” decisions all the time and cut players without honoring their contracts then the players have every right to complain they have outplayed theirs. The days of sign on the dotted line and get paid X amount of dollars is over. It’s only guaranteed when it’s in your account, and even then they can try and recoup signing bonuses and everything else that they add to the fine print.
