He’ll be the first rookie QB to start for the Jets since Matt Robinson in 1977.

But make no mistake, Mark Sanchez will look to make a much bigger name for himself when he takes the field opening day for the Jets as the teams starting quarterback September 13th.

This morning Rex Ryan told Sanchez, along with now backup Kellen Clelmens that Sanchez would be the starting QB, ending a QB derby that started from the moment that the Jets moved up to the 5th spot in the NFL Draft in April to draft him.

Sanchez didn’t have the best of starts vs the Ravens on Monday, as on his first pass he threw a pick that was returned for a score. After that though the rookie settled down, and that was a big reason that the coach made the decision to go with him.

Drafted out of USC, Sanchez has gone 6-of-12 in two preseason games, with one touchdown pass and one interception while Clemens, in his fourth season, is 9-of-14 for 84 yards in the preseason.
