For Real? You Bet! Jets Stop Pats 16-9 for Early Bragging Rights

Patriots Jets Football
If you thought the Jets defense last week vs the Texans was a fluke – think again.

The Jets defense was the key, as Rex Ryan and the “other” New York team stunned Tom Brady and the Patriots on Sunday, winning 16-9 in their home opener at the Meadowlands in front of a loud and rowdy crowd that was called out this week by Ryan. The defense fed off the crowd, holding the Pats to no second half points.

The offense scored 13 second half points, this after trailing 9-3 at the half. Mark Sanchez had another solid game, going 14-for-22 for 163 yards with a touchdown. That only Jets offensive TD came from Sanchez when he hit tight end Dustin Keller from 9 yards out to give the Jets a 10-9 lead at the 13:57 mark of the third quarter.

Jay Feely kicked a 24 and 39-yard pair of field goals to extend the to 16-9. The second came with 9:48 left to make sure the Pats would have to score a TD to tie it up, unlike last weeks fluke win over the Bills. But Ryan sent his defense each and every play, making sure Brady, without the services of Wes Welker, could never get in a groove.

Brady was held to 23-for-47 for 216 yards with no TD’s and one pick. The Pats run game was again a non-factor, as Fred Taylor was the leading rusher with 46 yards, and the Pats as a whole ran for 83 yards on 20 carries, but really they never were able to get going either.

This is a statement win, no question. The two teams traded barbs all week, but in the end, it was the Jets able to back it up. We shall see how the rematch goes, but for now, the 2-0 Jets clearly look like a team on a mission this year, while the Pats look dare I say – lost.

  1. This game really did set the tone for what the Jets are trying to achieve this season. If the Defense can continue to bring the pressure on opposing QB’s and the running game develops, I think the NY Jets are gonna be a force for a long time!
