Sanchez, Greene Help Jets Advance; Declaw Bengals 24-14

Shonn Greene (#23), Dustin Keller (#81)

It probably is hereditary, but New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan has his team believing that they can advance far in the playoffs. His father Buddy, a relatively successful football coach in his own right, carried the same demeanor. Saturday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals would provide its first real test of the type of team that they are as they haven’t visited the postseason since 2006.

Based on the 60-minute effort that they put together in less-than-ideal conditions, they passed with flying colors.

Mark Sanchez, without the gaudy numbers, was efficient while the running attack of Shonn Greene and Thomas Jones pounded the ball; the aforementioned combination was able to overcome the arm – or lack thereof – of Carson Palmer and the rushing efforts of Cedric Benson as New York advanced to the next round of the AFC playoffs, defeating Cincinnati 24-14 at Paul Brown Stadium.

The Jets pulled ahead 14-7 by halftime with two big plays off Sanchez’s hand. He faked a handoff and made a perfect pitchout to Greene, who needed only one block to find open space for a 39-yard touchdown run, the longest of his career. Sanchez by halftime had went 7-of-10 for 94 yards and could have been even better save for a dropped pass by Braylon Edwards in the Bengals’ end zone.

Sanchez led an eight-play, 75-yard drive that culminated in Thomas Jones’ 9-yard run for a 21-7 lead late in the third quarter. Benson broke a 47-yard touchdown run – the longest in Bengals playoff history – that got Cincinnati within a touchdown, but Sanchez and Greene turned it on again, setting up Jay Feely’s 25-yard field goal. The Bengals’ fate was sealed to a degree when Shayne Graham missed a pair of field goals in the second half, including a 28-yarder.

Sanchez, while not putting up the best of numbers, was very efficient as he went 12-of-15 for 182 yards with a touchdown while Palmer went 18-of-36 for 146 yards with a TD and an interception. Greene led the Jets’ rushing effort with 135 yards on 21 carries with a TD while Jones added 34 rushing yards and a score. Meanwhile, Benson had a decent effort, rushing for 169 yards and a score on just 21 carries.

Dustin Keller led the Jets’ receivers with 3 receptions for 99 yards and a TD while Jerricho Cotchery caught 6 passes for 67 yards; the Bengals receivers were led by Laveranues Coles with 6 receptions for 48 yards and a score while Chad Ochocinco caught 2 for 28 yards.

New York (10-7) advances to the next round of the playoffs as they await to meet the winner of the Baltimore-New England game Sunday as it will determine whether they will face the Indianapolis Colts or San Diego Chargers. Cincinnati ends their season 10-7.

Oh, if I only knew a bookie. This game was in the bag, never felt so sure. Best defense in the NFL, great running game, cold weather and the swagger…plus that beating from last week.

  2. Alfred says:

I thought Brian Schottenheimer had one of his best games of the year. He added Keller to the game plan and it caught Cincinnati totally off guard. Schotty also ran to the left much more after showing more right side runs last week.
