Tomlinson aboard; former Charger inks two-year deal

The Jets led the league in rushing last year, and today they have added another threat in the backfield, as they have inked former Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson to a two-year deal.

“He wanted to go to a team that he thought had a chance to compete for the championship,” L.T. agent Tom Condon told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. “He wanted to go somewhere where he had a chance to have a significant role, and so with the Jets he also was going to be very familiar with the offensive system.”

Tomlinson was let go last month by the Chargers after a 9-year career there. He was being courted by the Vikings, but after talking to them last Thursday took off to New York, and was impressed with coach Rex Ryan and the run game that the Jets seemed focused in on.

Right now L.T. ranks eighth on the NFL’s career rushing list with 12,490 yards, and the Jets handed him a deal worth about $5.2 million. “Good move by the organization,” Jets CB Darelle Revis tweeted. “I couldn’t be more excited about this.”

Last season Tomlinson ran for 730 yards—his first season under 1,000—on 223 carries for an average of 3.3 yards per carry, all career lows. He scored 12 touchdowns.
