Free agent kicker Neil Rackers has agreed to a two year deal with the Houston Texans.
Rackers was scheduled to visit the Jets on Tuesday, but the Texans swooped in late.
The deal breaker appears to be money. The Texans gave him a contract worth $2.1 million annually, while the Jets’ offer was believed to be $1.5 million. The Jets could not go any higher because of the “final four” restrictions.
It’s a shame lost out on Rackers. I have no faith in Nick Folk as our kicker, but the interest in Rackers at least shows the organization wants to bring in some competition.
However, it’s a pretty slim free agent market. The only options are Shayne Graham, who shanked two easy field goals against us in the playoffs, and Matt Stover, who is 42.
Letting Jay Feely walk is looking dumber every day that passes. He may not have been the best kicker, but he was always reliable. He set a Jets record for consecutive field goals made (24) and stepped up in the playoffs when he had to punt for the sidelined Steve Weatherford.
The Jets will miss Feely more than they think and they would be foolish if they didn’t bring in a legitimate competitor for Nick Folk.
