News and Notes From Training Camp

Rex said he was “disappointed” with the physicality in practice yesterday. Well, the players must have heard that.

Wayne Hunter and Kenwin Cummings got into a minor skirmish today at camp after Cummings had a few late hits on Hunter.

That lead to Brian Schottenheimer and Mike Pettine jawing at each other from the sidelines.

Rex, of course, ate it up.

“There was a little competitive spirit out there, and it got a little sensitive, I thought. That’s always great to see. You love watching it when coaches go at it and all that jazz.”

Two practices down and apparently that’s all its taken for Rex to lay off Nick Folk.

“I want to go on record, I’m officially not worried about our Pro Bowl kicker,” said Ryan, referencing Folk’s Pro Bowl season in Dallas (2007).

Folk was 5-5 today on kicks, though the longest was from just 35 yards out.

Antonio Cromartie looked great and made an athletic interception of Sanchez in 11-ons-11’s.

Cromartie also had a nice hit on his former teammate from San Diego (Tomlinson) and Rex took time to praise his improved tackling.

Though Rex did still throw a jab at Cromartie.

“I was like, ‘Ooh, nice tackle,'” Ryan said. “They could’ve used that in the playoff game.”

Other Notes

  • After struggling with a bad case on construction worker hands yesterday, David Clowney rebounded and had a 80 yard touchdown reception, caught over Brodney Pool.
  • Vernon Gholston was getting reps with the first team defense. Ryan singled out Gholston saying “he’s had a couple of big days.” Gholston also had a “would be sack.” Only for Vernon Gholston does that count as news.
  • Vlad Ducasse took reps with the first team at left guard.
  • Rookie free agent tight end Jeff Cumberland has showed soft hands, but still needs a lot of work on his blocking. He is an interesting developmental player for the Jets. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Jets stash him on the practice squad this year and he rounds out his game.

That’s it for now.
