Ravens Edge Jets 10-9 in Season Opener

The Jets played their first game in the new home on Monday night, but it was one that they would like to soon forget.

The Ravens came into the New Meadowlands and defeated the Jets 10-9. As great as the Jets played on defense, it was still not enough to make up for their lackluster performance on offense.

The Jets offense sputtered the entire night, never getting into a rhythm and mustered just three field goals from Nick Folk.  They were held to 176 yards total yards and six first downs. Second year quarterback Mark Sanchez was ineffective, managing a measly 74 yards through the air. He didn’t get much help from who receivers. The usually reliable and steady handed Jerricho Cotchery had an off night only recording one catch while dropping two passes.

The Jets killed themselves the entire night. The defense forced three turnovers, but the offense only scored points off one of the turnovers and fumbled the ball inside the Ravens 30 yard line on another. Perhaps the main killer on the night for the Jets was penalties. They finished with 14 penalties for 125 yards, including 10 for 100 yards in the first half alone. Braylon Edwards, Antonio Cromartie and Kyle Wilson were the worst offenders.  Without a few of those penalties and the Jets are likely coming out of that game 1-0.

To make matters worse, defensive tackle Kris Jenkins went down in the first quarter with a knee injury (the same one he hurt last season) and didn’t return. The injury didn’t look good, but there is no word as of now as to the extent of the injury. The Jets proved they could play great defense without Jenkins last season, but his presence in the middle would surely be missed anyway.

One of the few bright spots to take out of this game was that the Jets played this poorly, yet they only lost by one point to one of the elite teams in the AFC. It’s still not a win, but it’s only one game and there’s a long season ahead.

The Jets now have a short week before taking on the division rival Patriots this Sunday at the New Meadowlands.
