Should Jets Fans be Worried About Mark Sanchez?

Mark Sanchez has had his ups and downs in his second year as a pro. He started off the season with a dud against Baltimore, but followed that up with 3 good performances. However, in his last three games he has been less than impressive. So should Jets fan be worried about Sanchez? The guys at Football Outsiders took a deeper look at Sanchez.

Sanchez has cut his interceptions dramatically. However, although defenders have not been catching the ball, they have been getting their hands on it. Jets opponents have defensed 5.0 passes per game this season, up from 3.4/game in Sanchez’s 15 starts last year. All told, Jets opponents have intercepted or defensed 18.1 percent of Sanchez’s passes so far in 2010; that’s only slightly lower than last year’s rate (19.5 percent). In other words, Sanchez has avoided turnovers in 2010 not because he has been more careful with the ball but because opponents have been dropping their interception opportunities. As we’ve seen in the past two weeks, Sanchez will still make mistakes, and good defenses will be able to capitalize on them.
