Jets Escape in Detorit and Defeat the Lions 23-20 in OT

A Nick Folk 30 yard field goal in overtime gave the New York Jets a 23-20 victory over the Detroit Lions.

With the Jets down 20-10 with four and a half minutes left Mark Sanchez led two scoring drives to tie the game at the end of regulation.

The first was a 6 play 44 yard drive the Sanchez capped with a one yard touchdown run. Then after Detroit went three and out the Jets got the ball back at their own 22 yard line with 1:40 left. Sanchez drove the Jets 47 yards in nine plays to set up a Nick Folk 36 yard field goal to tie the game and send it to overtime.

The Jets won the toss to start overtime and started at their own 32 yard line. On second down Sanchez threw a pass over the middle to Santonio Holmes, who escaped a tackler and raced 52 yards down to the 16 yard line. Three plays later a Nick Folk 30 yard field goal won the game for the Jets and sent the Lions home in despair.

Sanchez threw for a career high 336 yards including a 76 yard bomb to Braylon Edwards at the end of the first half to give the Jets a 10-7 lead going into halftime.

The Lions looked to tie the game in the third quarter with a 21 yard field goal by Jason Hanson. The kick was good, but Trevor Pryce was flagged for roughing the kicker giving the Lions a fresh set of downs. Matthew Stafford  plunged in from one yard out on the next play. However, Hanson was hurt on the field goal attempt so Ndamukong Suh attempted the point after try and subsequently hit the upright and missed.

The missed opportunity came back to bite the Lions as the Jets tied the game on a field at the end of regulation. The loss drops the Lions to 2-6, though they played nothing like a 2-6 team today and throughout this season.

The win, combined with the Patriots loss to the Browns, has the Jets back in first place in the AFC East at 6-2. They travel to Cleveland to take on former coach Eric Mangini and the  Browns next week.
