Jets Have Fun With Push-Ups

One of the areas of weakness for the Jets is penalties. They currently rank 27th in the league in penalties. To try to put a stop to this, during practice the Jets normally make which ever unit committed the penalty do 10 push-ups. However, now they have added a new twist to it.

Everyone from owner Woody Johnson to general manager Mike Tannenbaum to coaches to video personnel did pushups at yesterday’s practice whenever a penalty was called.

In the past, the defense was only required to do 10 push-ups if a defensive player committed the penalty (excluding that player) and the offense if an offensive player was
flagged in practice.

“That didn’t work,” Tannenbaum told me with a laugh. The Jets, who were penalized 11 times last Sunday against the Lions, are 27th in the league in getting flagged.

“We get to the team meeting (Wednesday) and Rex says, ‘When you cause a penalty, you’re not hurting the defense or offense. You’re hurting the entire team. So, the entire team is going to do 10 pushups.’”

However, coaches decided to join the players when the first of four penalties were called at practice yesterday.

“It snowballed, where the coaches did it,” Tannenbaum said. “So I’m like, ‘Screw that. If they’re doing it, I’m going to do it.’ So Woody’s out there with me. So Woody does it. I was right next to him. The trainers, the video people…everyone starts doing it. I did them with Woody.”

“We’re going to do it together as an organization,” he added. “I’m going to email the scouts every day and tell them, ‘Hey, do 50 today.’”

I like this idea. Even though I’m a bengals fan deep down, I like Sanchez and the group you guys have going. I’d LOVE for us to start this policy as well.(unfortunatly, with Mike Brown around, I doubt it will happen) I want a big day for the Jets for two reasons, one: I enjoy your team, two: shut down the Browns, while they aren’t high profile, everyone in Cleveland is high energy. I see Hillis kept to mediocore at most. Good luck
