Jets Fine, Suspend Sal Alosi

The Jets have acted harshly and shifty in regards to strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi suspending him without pay for the rest of the season and fining him an additional $25,000.

Jenny Vrentas of the The Star-Ledger has more details:

His suspension begins immediately, and he is not permitted to have access to the team’s facility or interact with coaches or players in an official capacity until the day after the final game of the 2010 season.

The Jets were in contact with the league office, but general manager Mike Tannenbaum said the punishment was decided on by the Jets. There will not be a league penalty on top of what the team has levied. Tannenbaum didn’t specify if the team also seriously considered firing Alosi.

“I don’t want to get into hypotheticals,” Tannenbaum said, “except to say we look at everything, and we felt like this was the appropriate action to take.”

The No. 2 strength and conditioning coach, Bryan Dermody, will take over in Alosi’s stead. Alosi was notified of his punishment earlier this evening in what Tannenbaum called a “quick conversation.” The team hasn’t yet made a decision on if Alosi will be allowed back on the sideline in 2011, Tannenbaum added.
