Rookie QB McElroy Dislocates Thumb

Rookie quarterback Greg McElroy is out after he dislocated the thumb on his right hand.

The seventh-round pick out of the University of Alabama is the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart behind Mark Sanchez and Mark Brunell, but got the start in Thursday preseason finale. McElory had completed 3-of-6 attempts for 29 yards before banging his throwing hand off teammate Matt Kroul’s helmet.

McElroy cracked a bone near his right thumb during the fourth quarter of the 2011 Senior Bowl. On that play, McElroy’s hand connected with former Mississippi State left tackle Derek Sherrod’s helmet during a pass attempt. That injury prevented McElroy from throwing at the 2011 Scouting Combine and Alabama’s pro day, with the two-year starter for the Crimson Tide holding a smaller workout in Tuscaloosa on April 6.
