Jets Gab NFL Week Seven Preview – San Diego at New York Jets

The Jets host the San Diego Chargers Sunday in a big AFC matchup that could show just how good or bad this Jets team truly is in 2011. Monday the Jets stepped up with a big win over Miami, and while the Chargers are way better than the Fins, if the Jets play as well Sunday as they did Monday, they will find themselves at 4-3.

Here’s the keys to the game, as well as our prediction for Sunday’s matchup in East Rutherford.

1. Get Sanchez off to a Fast Start
– Sanchez’s 82.3 passer rating ranks 20th in the NFL, and nothing seems to get easier facing a Chargers defense which ranks second in the league against the pass. Getting him some early confidence with some quick throws and passes to guys like Santonio Holmes and others will get the team into a groove. At MetLife Stadium in 2011, Sanchez has completed 57-of-93 passes for 718 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions for an 89.8 passer rating.

2. Keep the Ball – San Diego, which leads the league in time of possession (35:17 per game), has won three of its past four trips to the Jets’ home facility and seeks its fourth straight win in 2011. The Chargers run well, and the Jets have to make sure to when they get the ball, keep it and not give it away with silly turnovers. If the Bolts get their run game going, they will again win the TOP battle, which puts the Jets behind the 8-ball because it means they won’t have as many possessions and they need to make them count.

3. Revis Needs to Come Up Big – Rivers and Jackson against Revis figures to be an interesting top-shelf matchup, especially after the Jets cornerback’s two interceptions on Monday night against Miami. Revis needs to have a big game, and it wouldn’t be a shock to see Rivers try and challenge him a few times. When he does, Revis needs to make plays, and getting a pick or two and maybe even another pick six would help their chances a great deal.

Prediction – The Jets got back on track with a win over the Dolphins Monday night, but can’t afford a letdown this week against a better Chargers team. San Diego coach Norv Turner and Jets coach Rex Ryan are now waging war on the podiums, and it could make this a feisty affair. San Diego will try to run past the Jets with Ryan Mathews and Mike Tolbert, while the Jets will look to get a few deep throws to try and counter with big plays. Tough one to call, but the Jets at home have the slight edge. New York Jets 20 San Diego 14
