A QB Controversy in the Making in the Big Apple

Tim Tebow | New York Jets Tickets

The New York Jets have begun OTA’s in preparation for the 2012-2013 NFL season.  It is very easy to notice a few stark contrasts between this Jets team and last years starting first with their “lighter” head coach Rex Ryan, who lost over 100 pounds in the off-season.  Furthermore, there is a new back-up quarterback in town who, despite his best efforts, is followed almost everywhere by a mob of media and paparazzi.  This quarterback is Tim Tebow who in his thus far short NFL career has been one of the most talked about players, especially considering he is a back up.  Tebow has been working hard this off-season as he increased his weight to over 250 pounds.  This is due in large part to the fact that he will be playing in the Jets special teams packages and will need to protect himself and be able to hit and block effectively.

The Jets were 21st league wide last season in total passing yards per game at just over 206.  These numbers were accumulated by starter Mark Sanchez who, though the Jets maintain is the starter, appears to have far more pressure on him considering his back-up led his team to the playoffs last season which is something Sanchez could not do.  Though the coaching staff has appeared to make it clear that Sanchez, the superior thrower of the two, will be starting however it appears as if Tebow will get time as the moment calls for it, including goal line and third down situations.  Tebow, though having one of the more unconventional throwing motions amongst NFL QB’s, has the heart of a lion and furthermore is a modest, respectable individual in a time where athletes usually do not give us much to look up too off of the field.

The Jets are typically a team that is favored to be among the top teams in the AFC and after not making the playoffs last year they should be as hungry as ever.  The Jets promote the old-school form of football with their trash-talking antics and their ground and pound offensive strategy, anchored by their hard-hitting defense.  With so much pressure on this team, do not be surprised to see Tim Tebow’s playing time gradually increase if the Jets under-perform at any point during the 2012-2013 NFL regular season.
