The Jets may still be searching for a new general manager, but they’re already making changes on the coaching staff. The Daily News has learned that quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh will not be retained for the 2013 season, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports.
Cavanaugh, whose contract expires at the end of the month, appeared to be on thin ice after the 2011 season, but he survived the ax. Mark Sanchez was in a holding pattern, at best, after an uneven 2011 season, but the young quarterback regressed this season.
Rex Ryan and his staff returned to work on Monday after a nearly week-long hiatus. Cavanaugh was informed Monday morning when he returned to the team facility that he won’t be back for next season, according to a source.
