Tremendous Questions Need To Be Answered This Offseason

By Jordan Aaron

We are coming up on about a week and a half of the offseason and about the same amount of time since I last wrote something. Well, I’ve been busy with all the work that comes with returning to school from winter vacation. As you can see, I am back to school, and back to writing.

Ahhhh, do you remember the days of Hard Knocks with the Jets, thinking, “Man these guys are geniuses.” I remember seeing Tannembaum driving down to an undisclosed location to meet with Darelle Revis. Sanchez looked like the next Namath (although there never will be another Broadway Joe). 3 years later, most of the cast of that show is gone. Tannembaum – gone. Brian Schottenheimer (and his replacement) – gone. Mike Westoff – gone. LT – gone. Jerricho Cotchery – gone. It is rebuild time.

The Jets finished their season with tremendous questions to be answered. Who will coach the Jets next year? Who will be the OC next year? Who will be the quarterback next year? How are we going to fix our receiving problem?

With Mike Tannembaum, Tony Sparano and Matt Cavanaugh departing the team, the first place to start is the staff. While the Jets have scheduled another meeting with the Falcons’ David Caldwell, it looks like Tom Gamble could be a serious contender for this job as well.

My wish is for him to come to New York. For 2 reasons; 1) he has done an amazing job in San Francisco, drafting Michael Crabtree, Colin Kaepernick and picking up Alex Smith. Also, he has done work with LaRon Landry whose contract expires this year and the Jets want back – or at least I do. 2) I’ll explain later. As for OC, I would suspect Cam Cameron or Norv Turner.

Rex seems to have Turner at the top of list, however, and I do too. My reasoning for this, I will also get to later (don’t worry it will all tie together). I don’t know too much about quarterback coaches i.e. who is on the market and who wants the job, but I do know that Norv Turner and Cam Cameron (I love that name) are quarterbacks’ dream coordinators.

Now, we will get to the personnel that will be on the attack next year. I will start off by saying goodbye to Tim Tebow. I’m sorry we took you for a year and wasted you. Please go to the Jaguars where they will exercise your potential. Now, onto business. We need a new quarterback. Whether it comes from trade, free agency or just building on Greg McElroy, we need a change.

My idea for the next quarterback relies on a game of what-ifs. It all starts with Colin Kaepernick. He needs to win this week against the Packers for this plan to work. This would make him the ultimate starting QB for the 49ers and Alex Smith will be available. Now, this is where getting Mr. Tom Gamble comes into the mix. He would be a friendly face for Smith, possibly luring him into the Jets organization. Now here comes step three – hire Norv Turner.

He would be the perfect, quarterback friendly coordinator who could also run a west coast style offense with Alex Smith (and boom goes the dynamite). However, that has too many ifs. As you probably would guess, I’m for starting Greg McElroy next year if the Smith plan (we will call operation black cobra) doesn’t work out.

As always, let us know what you think should happen this offseason in the comments.
