In an interview Saturday afternoon, Jets new offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said that he’s had frequent conversations with Mark Sanchez.
After previously stating that Sanchez had a “leg up” in the competition — a statement he clarified today by saying that Sanchez knew some of the West Coast principles from USC — Mornhinweg said Sanchez understands there will be competition, Conor Orr of the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
“Mark knows what I think about him, I was excited to get here and, about two weeks ago we started the process,” Mornhinweg. “I have spoken to him, we speak quite often but he understands, this is competition now, let’s rock and roll. Here we have four, or even more quarterbacks, who say hey, I’ve got an opportunity to win a job here. That thing’s going to filter out with competition.”
Mornhinweg said that Sanchez has been a willing participant so far in the offseason and his making sure he’s still in the mix. Per multiple people with knowledge of the situation, Sanchez does expect to be one of the quarterbacks competing for the job come training camp.
“Mark has done as much or even more than I’ve asked or David has asked. David has put a lot of time and effort into the QB position. They’re all off and running.”
