The Jets announced on Tuesday that Mark Sanchez will start Friday’s pre-season game against the Detroit Lions.
Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said that Sanchez had “earned” the right to start on Friday with an “outstanding camp.” Head coach Rex Ryan backed up his fellow coach’s comments saying it was “the natural thing to do.”
However, Mornhinweg is reaching when calling Sanchez’s performance in camp “outstanding.” Sanchez has had a solid, but unspectacular camp. But this isn’t HBO’s Hard Knocks, and we don’t see what happens behind closed doors. One of the over arching positives on Sanchez has been his excellent grasp of Mornhinweg’s system — a factor that could well have swayed the teams decision.
Ryan also announced that Geno Smith will see some time with the starting offense in Detroit, although he didn’t specify exactly how much.
While it’s only a pre-season game, this is a big win for Mark Sanchez. It will give him a huge boost in confidence as he can now acknowledge that he is legitimately going to get a chance to fight for the right to keep his job.
It appears Mark Sanchez is more alive in this competition than everyone had previously thought.
