A few quick hits from Tuesday at Jets training camp.
Top 5 Defense?
The Jets will have a top-5 defense in 2012 according to Rex Ryan. “I’m certainly confident that we’ll be where we always are or better,” Ryan said, when asked whether he see’s the Jets having a top-5 defense in 2013. The Jets have finished in the top-10 of total defense in all of Ryan’s four seasons in charge — 1st in 2009, 3rd in 2010, 5th in 2011 and 8th in 2012. However, it’s a bold statement to make just days after the Jets first team defense was torn apart by the Jaguars Blaine Gabbert; hardly one of the NFL’s elite.
Hillard Finished for the Year
The Jets lost FB Lex Hilliard for the season on Wednesday due to a broken scapula, according to various reports. Hilliard had been in a tight competition with 2013 seventh round draft pick Tommy Bohanon for the Jets full back job. Bohanan, or Tommy “Bahama” as Rex Ryan calls him, was already looking like the likely winner of the competition, Hilliard’s season ending injury just speeds up the process and hands him the job by default.
Smith will Start against Giants
As expected, providing he doesn’t suffer any setbacks with his injured ankle, Geno Smith will start Saturday’s third pre-season game against the New York Giants, according to New York Daily News’ Manish Mehta. The Jets clearly want Smith to have a fair shot with the first team before they make their decision. Smith knows what he has to do to win the job, he told the media earlier in the week “I just have to go out there and execute, do what I’m told, do what I’m coached to do, go out there [and] run the plays to the best of my ability.” The rookie already has an uphill battle to win the competition due to the time he has missed with his ankle injury. He will need a spectacular, and turnover free, performance to upheave Sanchez.
