Jets Hire Thomas McGaughey As Special Teams Coach

Thomas McGaughey

LSU special teams coach Thomas McGaughey has been hired to the same position with the Jets, Dom Cosentino of the Newark Star Ledger reports.

McGaughey, 40, replaces Ben Kotwica, who took the same job with the Redskins in mid-January. McGaughey’s hire fills the only open coordinator position on head coach Rex Ryan’s staff. Linebackers coach Brian VanGorder, now the defensive coordinator at Notre Dame, also departed after the 2013 season.

McGaughey spent the last three seasons as the special teams coordinator/defensive assistant at LSU. He won a Super Bowl ring as the assistant special teams coordinator for the Giants from 2007-10.

Before that, McGaughey was the assistant special teams coordinator for the Broncos (2005-06) and Chiefs (2002). He’s also had other coaching stints at the college and high school levels, plus a year with the Scottish Claymores in the old World League of American Football.
