For the second consecutive summer, Jets quarterback Geno Smith recently was ranked as the NFL’s worst quarterback, in an ESPN.com poll of league insiders (coaches, general managers, personnel directors).
Smith, naturally, doesn’t put much stock into this poll. On Wednesday, when the Jets reported to training camp, Smith essentially mocked the poll, Darryl Slater of the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
“I laugh at that,” he said. “I laugh at it. It’s hilarious.”
Smith was obviously being sarcastic, but why is this hilarious? (It’s not like this was a writer pulling his own rankings out of thin air. These are the opinions of knowledgeable people across the NFL.)
“It is [hilarious],” he said. “It is.”
Last summer, Smith brushed off being ranked last.
“It was hilarious last year, too,” he said. “That doesn’t matter at this point. We’ve got to work on us as a team. That’s why I hate to talk about individual stuff, because it’s a team game. No matter what they rate me, wherever we finish at the end of the year is what’s most important.”
