What Has Happened To Ryan Fitzpatrick?

It’s a very good question and one that most Jets fans are struggling to answer. Last year, the New York running game was weak and Fitzpatrick had to more or less carry the offense – in a contract year; a crucial point to remember.

The Harvard graduate, who was drafted into the NFL by the Rams in 2005, has failed to live up to the hype this year since signing a one-year $12 million contract in July. A coincidence? Potentially but hear our thoughts on the Jets quarterback before jumping to any assumptions; it could be a deeper problem.

If you look closely at Fitzpatrick’s professional career, you notice a trend in his role and style of play – no matter where he has been. For the vast majority of his NFL tenure, he has been a capable backup and Fitzpatrick has always tended to perform well in somebody’s absence.

However, when the pressure is on and he has to carry an offense, he seems to crumble. And to be honest, it is hard to label this as a coincidence when it has occurred consistently for a decade or so…

Last season, Fitzpatrick threw 31 touchdown passes – a career-high total for the Jets signal caller. Meanwhile, he racked up 3,905 yards and 335 completions; two high totals compared to his previous years.

To be fair, he was throwing to Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker – two reliable and competent pass-catchers. Nowadays, he should focus a lot more on using Forte out of the backfield and this could help to take some of the pressure off his shoulders under center.

As of October 7th, Todd Bowles’ side are priced at 50/1 to turn their form around and win the Super Bowl this season.

Whilst the New England Patriots look like they are set to retain the AFC East crown once again, New York could sneak a wildcard spot if Fitzpatrick cuts out the interceptions and focuses more on improving his own game. Who knows, Fitzpatrick could just be going through a phase; and Jets fans will be keeping their fingers crossed ahead of a difficult run of fixtures. If they fail to pick up their form in the coming weeks, they could slip out of playoff contention – and Fitzpatrick’s chances of earning an extended contract could be all but over.

The Ryan Fitzpatrick story is about to get even more interesting… watch this space.
