Jets RB Bell Wont Be Disciplined for Saturday Night Bowling Trip

Le’Veon Bell won’t be disciplined for his Saturday night bowling excursion even though it was a bad optic. Adam Gase admitted Tuesday that he would have preferred that the veteran running back stay at home to fully recover from the flu, but the coach didn’t seem overly concerned by the situation, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports.

Bell missed two practices last week before the team ruled him out Saturday afternoon for Sunday’s game against the Dolphins. He spent a couple hours channeling his inner Pete Weber in the evening.

“We didn’t want him coming to the (team) hotel or locker room when he was still contagious,” Gase said Tuesday. “That wasn’t his fault that we said that he was still contagious. That’s what the doctors told him. I’d rather him not be… I’d rather him be at home just getting better, but that will be a conversation we have (later Tuesday).”

Gase said that Bell, who is having the worst year of his career, didn’t violate any team rules.

“What am I going to discipline him for?” Gase said. “I can’t tell him you have to stay in your house.”

Asked if he felt it was a bad optic that a sick player was bowling the night before a game that he had already ruled out for, Gase quipped, “Yeah. I would say so.”

The coach admitted that Bell did want to play in the game despite his illness, but the medical staff was concerned that he would spread the flu to teammates. The Seahawks and Patriots dealt with a flu bug that affected many players. The Patriots even took two planes to Houston a couple weeks ago to keep the healthy players away from the sick ones.

“He wanted to play,” Gase said. “But they told him, ‘You’re still contagious.’ They didn’t want him around all the other guys. They thought it would spread through the team. We didn’t want to have a situation like some of these other teams were having when they got 20 guys out during the week…. I know he didn’t feel great, but I know he was probably thinking I can still go.”
