Jets Say They Want Safety Jamal Adams Around for a Long Time

New York Jets GM Joe Douglas told reporters on Monday that the goal is for the Jets to get safety Jamal Adams in a Jets uniform for a long time with a contract extension.

But – Douglas did say he would listen to offers for the Pro Bowl safety.

“The plan would be for Jamal to be here long term,” Douglas said during a pre-draft conference call with reporters. “Again, I’ve also made it known I have to do what’s in the best interest of the team. If other teams call to talk about players, I’ll listen.

“Going into this draft, my intent isn’t to move any players. But if a team calls, we’re going to have conversations. I don’t view it as hedging. I view it as doing my job.”

Adams, signed for 2020 and 2021 (option year), apparently is unhappy with his contract situation. ESPN reported last week that the All-Pro safety is planning to skip the voluntary offseason program, which begins virtually on April 27.

Adams hasn’t addressed the matter on social media, but he said in early February that he expects an extension this offseason. He wants to become the NFL’s highest-paid safety, and there are some who believe he wants to be the highest-paid player on the Jets, surpassing linebacker C.J. Mosley ($17 million per year).

Adams is due to make $3.6 million this year. He already received $2.8 million in the form of a roster bonus that was paid last month.

  1. Rich Hausig says:

Here is what JD didnt say. If Jerry Jones gives me picks 15 and 51 Id be the happiest GM in the NFL because while Adams is a good player, hes not Ronnie Lott and frankly, hes selfish and he talks too much.

  2. Michael Daniel says:

Totally agree. What do expect Douglas to say
I can get him out of here fast enough.Drama and he thinks he’s bigger than the
    team but the offer needs
    a few more pieces.
