The Jets may have to wait to see if Joe Flacco can be a solid backup to Sam Darnold.
The newly signed Jets QB will not be ready for the regular season according to ESPN, as he continues to recover from offseason neck surgery.
“I can’t speak to exactly when I’m going to be ready, but it will not be day one,” Flacco said Tuesday in an interview with SiriusXM NFL radio.
“Obviously, we’ll get with the doctors and I have another checkup come August, so we’ll see where that goes.”
Flacco inked a one-year deal with the Jets worth $1.5 million. The report said the Jets were well aware that Flacco would not be ready for opening day against the Bills.
“First and foremost, I want to help the team in any way possible and also be a guy Sam can lean on, that he can learn from,” Flacco said.
“I would say those are the two most important things: Help out the guys on the team and help out Sam to do all they can.
This is sad to hear that Flacco won’t be ready for the start of the season. However, given that his role is a backup, this won’t be a huge loss for the Jets. As long as Darnold is ready to play, the Jets will be in god hands and will benefit from Flacco when he ready to play.
