Jets vs 49ers: Can the Jets Get on Track Against the NFC Champs?

Opening day didn’t go so well for the Jets, as their trip to Buffalo was a disaster as the team fell to 0-1 with an ugly 27-17 loss to the Bills.

This week won’t be much easier, as the Jets will be at home to host the NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers, and many betting experts don’t see New York being able to hang with San Fran.

One thing that is for sure is that the 49ers need to rebound as badly as the Jets, as they lost in stunning fashion at home to the Arizona Cardinals 24-20.

San Francisco also won’t have a couple of big players in the lineup, including cornerback Richard Sherman, and tight end George Kittle’s status for the game is up in the air.

Here’s a couple keys for the Jets if they are going to pull off the week two upset.

1. Get Darnold Going Early

Last week it was painful watching Sam Darnold trying to get the Jets offense going, and Darnold never got on track.

He ended the day 21-for-35 for just 215 yards, and most of that came in garbage time. If the Jets are going to hang with San Fran, they need to get the offense moving early.

”My timing needs to be better,” Darnold said. ”I think I did hurry some things. I feel like just at the beginning of a game I’ve just got to relax and take a deep breath, ease myself into it and make the throws when they’re there.”

That will be easier said than done, as the 49ers pass rush is even tougher than that of the Bills, and Darnold needs to make good decisions downfield.

2. Try and Establish the Run

No Le’Veon Bell, as the Jets leading rusher is going to miss a couple weeks with a hamstring issue suffered against the Bills.

That means the run game will fall on veteran Frank Gore, who played a good portion of his career in San Fran with the Niners.

Gore will play this game with a chip on his shoulder, and he is going to want to prove he’s got gas left in his tank.

3. Get To Jimmy Garoppolo

”You’ve got to deal with the situation that you’re given and control what you can control.”

That was Garoppolo last week after they fell at home to the Cardinals. The Niners offense couldn’t control much, as the Cardinals defense was able to confuse Jimmy G and get to him a couple of times.

The Jets would be wise to take that game plan and duplicate it, making it a long day for the 49ers QB can only help the Jets get a victory.

Prediction: The Niners are road favorites on the East coast, but you can expect the Jets to stay in the game and likely may even have a late lead.

It will be up to Darnold to keep it that way, but in the end, it’ll be too much Niners defense and not enough offense from the Jets in this week two battle. 49ers 17 Jets 13
