Revis Replaceable? Not so Fast

Last week K.C. Joyner of ESPN Insider wrote an article saying that basically even though Darrelle Revis may be elite, he is replaceable.

He summed up his analysis with this:

That means, in the worst-case scenario of a long-term Revis holdout, New York could place Lowery on the field opposite Cromartie and start first-round draft pick Kyle Wilson at the nickel cornerback position. That would still give the Jets one of the best secondaries in the league despite the absence of Revis Island.

Unsurprisingly, this brought a heap of criticism on the shoulders of Joyner and he decided this week to write a response to the “so ill-informed” reaction.

He dealt with two “misunderstandings.” He attempted to prove wrong the quarrels that the Jets secondary would not be one of the best in the league without Revis and that the 46 defense doesn’t need a shutdown corner.

The problem I have with this article is that he failed to sufficiently back up the claim that the Jets secondary would still be good without Revis.

Revis makes the Jets pass defense what it is. He makes those around him better. He can take a receiver out of the game 1-on-1, which in turn allows the other corners to receive safety help over the top.

Last year if Lito Sheppard was our number one corner the Jets would have been shredded in the air. Imagine him covering the likes of Andre Johnson, Randy Moss (twice), Terrell Owens (twice), Steve Smith, Roddy White, Chad Ochocinco (twice), etc.

It wouldn’t have been fair. Just look at when the Jets played the Pats last year in Foxborough. Revis, for the most part, shut down Moss, but Wes Welker absolutely abused the rest of the Jets corner en route to a career day. Now without Revis shutting down Moss, both Moss and Welker would have been terrorizing the Jets.

Obviously no player is irreplaceable as the NFL is the ultimate team game, but Revis comes as close as it gets.

I would love to her your response to this, Mr. Joyner.
