Notes From Day 1 of Traning Camp

The first practice has come and gone and sure enough Rex had something to say about it.

Rex was “a little disappointed’’ in terms of its physicality, saying he was “expecting a little more spark to it.’’

However, there was still plenty of nuggets of information and I’ve scoured the web to find them:

  • Braylon Edwards had a nice day, making two impressive catches over new corner Anotonio Cromartie. Braylon was also sporting quite the beard.
  • Mark Sanchez didn’t look all that sharp, but on the plus side he didn’t throw any interceptions. It may not be the great news everyone is expecting, but cutting down on his interceptions is a necessity to him taking the step step as a quarterback.
  • So far so good for Nick Folk. He made 7 out of 8 field goals today at camp. Don’t worry though, the media is just waiting until he goes 2-8 one day and they will bury him.
  • The rough start for Joe McKnight continues. The rookie dropped a pass, a kick, and also got lit up by James Ihedigbo. Hopefully, day two will be kinder to Joe.
  • David Clowney is fighting for a roster spot and didn’t do himself any favors today. He dropped a few balls today.
  • Laveranues Coles wore #85 in the morning and then switched to #19 in the afternoon. Coles also stated that this will be his last season in the NFL and if the Jets didn’t call he was prepared to sign a one day contract and retire as a Jet. He also stated the fact that he is aware he might not be on the roster once Santonio Holmes is eligible to return from his suspension.
  • Rex raved about rookie fullback John Connor. “That Kentucky kid showed up today; he was out there thumping people,’’ Ryan said. “He took the breath out of three linebackers out there. I’ve never seen that before. Now you know why he has such a short neck.’’

Now some depth chart updates:

  • Brodney Pool started at safety over Eric Smith.
  • Mike DeVito lined up at defensive end.
  • Sione Pouha started over Kris Jenkins, but only becasue the Jets are easing Jenkins back into the lineup.
  • Matt Slauson and Vlad Ducasse rotated at left guard.
  • With Darrelle Revis holding out (damn! almost made it through the whole post without mentioning Revis) Dwight Lowery took the majority of snaps at corner with Kyle Wilson also getting some reps.
  • Shonn Greene and LaDainian Tomlinson shared carries at runningback though Tomlinson did fumble.

One final note:

  • Story is that Sanchez drove Brunell up to camp from the teams training facility in Jersey. Mark said that the two of them talked about “football, life and family” during their trip up.  Brunell said that “Man, (Sanchez) flew up here! We did it in three (hours) but it would have been six if I drove!” The student-teacher relationship if off to a great start so far.
