News From Training Camp

While most of the news about the Jets is centered around a certain cornerback who shall not be named, the Jets are still practicing and there is plenty going on in Cortland.

  • It looks like Kellen Clemens can pack his bags. Rex said today that Mark Brunell is “pretty much a lock for the No. 2 spot.” I’m still not crazy about the thought of Brunell being the backup quarterback. He should see plenty of time though in the preseason, and while the games mean nothing we should be able to tell if he has anything left in the tank.
  • Dwight Lowery has surrendered his starting cornerback slot to rookie Kyle Wilson, who Rex said would start Monday Night against the Giants. Lowery said that Wilson needs to get first team reps in order to accelerate his development and ultimately that is what’s best for the team. It’s not often you see a player put the team ahead of himself like that. If only another cornerback on the team would do that.
  • All reports have Matt Slauson with a sizeable lead over Vlad Ducasse for the left guard job and now Rex has stated that Slauson will indeed start against the Giants. Hopefully, this is more about how impressive Slauson has been and not because of how poor Ducasse has played. I know it’s still extremely early in his career and he is making a big transition from UMASS to the NFL, but I’d be slightly disappointed if he can’t beat out Slauson, a sixth round pick from 2009.
  • The Rex Ryan and Vernon Gholston bromance continues. Today Rex raved about how Gholston beat D’Brickashaw Ferguson twice in pass rushing drills. “He’s the only guy who beat Brick all year,” said Ryan. I’ll continue to say, I’ll believe it when he does it a game that counts. Rex was talking up Gholston all offseason last year and that amounted to zero sacks. I’m still not counting on Gholston for anything and I’ll consider anything he does a bonus.
