Jets Showing Interest in UCLA OLB Akeem Ayers

UCLA outside linebacker Akeem Ayers is on the Jets’ short list at No. 30 according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

Ayers has been projected to go anywhere from the middle of the first round (the Chargers at No 18 is a popular pick in mock drafts) to the end of the first round.

Ayers’ skill set is perfectly suited for a Jets defense that has some concerns at outside linebacker. Although Calvin Pace and Bryan Thomas are essential pieces to Rex Ryan’s unit, both are over 30. The Jets cut Jason Taylor, a one-year rental that was strictly a pass rusher, in the offseason. Ayers would give Ryan a versatile piece to their complex defensive puzzle.
