RB Powell could lessen McKnight’s, Smith’s role with Jets

The drafting of Louisville running back Bilal Powell seems to have hit a nerve with two Jets’ players, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. Running back Joe McKnight, drafted by the Jets in 2010, reportedly was upset when the Jets drafted Powell but has decided to use it as a motivation going forward.

Something needs to motivate McKnight as he did little as a rookie, accumulating only 209 yards from scrimmage. The Jets have stated they believe McKnight is ready to take a bigger role in the offense.

Jack-of-all-trades Brad Smith is a pending free agent. While he did not specifically mention the drafting of Powell, he has made it clear he wants to sign with a team that will give him a bigger role in the offense.

“My goal is every time I step on the field is to make something happen,” Smith said. “If a team is willing to give me that opportunity a little bit more… you only get to play this game one time. You don’t want to be at a place where they’re not giving you an opportunity.”

It’s cute that Joe McKnight was upset the Jets drafted Powell. Hey Joe, we were upset too – upset that you played like a chump last preseason and forced the coaches to lose faith in you. Just take care of your own business.
