Brian Schottenheimer Expects Breakout Season From Shonn Greene

Earlier in the offseason, LaDainian Tomlinson admitted that he was ready to embrace his role as the third down back. Thus, paving the way for Shonn Greene to take over and establish himself as the lead back. Offensive coordinator Brain Schottenheimer agrees and says Greene will “explode” in his third season.

Schottenheimer admitted that “without a doubt” Greene will be the primary ball carrier with an opportunity to be a consistent 18-20-carry RB each week, which projects to 300+ carries for the season. The bruising back has just 293 regular-season carries through his first two seasons.

“Shonn’s ready to take that next step,” Schottenheimer told me. “He’s just gotten better year in and year out. His durability this year was outstanding. You just see the confidence in his eyes. His ability to pick up pass protection stuff has been terrific the last couple years. We expect a breakout season from him. He’s a guy that’s got just huge, huge, huge potential that we think is right there ready for him to grab.”

This season (if there is one) could be make or break for Shonn Greene. Greene has been solid, not spectacular, in his first two seasons and surely left fans wanting more after a sophomore year that left many expecting more. Now, in his third year there are no more excuses left. He is being handed the starting job and has one of football’s best offensive line’s in front of him. If he stumbles, the Jets have plenty of options behind him. They didn’t draft Bilal Powell in the fourth round for nothing.

It’s great to see that Schottenheimer has confidence in Greene. Now let’s hope that translates onto the playing field.
