Nnamdi Asomugha spurned the New York Jets and signed with the Philadelphia Eagles this evening.
After waiting for days for Nnamdi to make up his mind, the Jets came up empty-handed. The Jets were long thought to be the front-runners for Asomugha, but the Eagles came in out of nowhere at the last moment to seal the deal.
So what happened?
My guess is that the Jets didn’t want to give Asomugha a contract that exceed the one they gave Darrelle Revis last off-season (the Eagles gave him a 5-year, $60 million contract, more than Revis got from the Jets). If they did, it could have potentially hurt their relationship with Revis and give him motivation to hold out (again).
So what’s next for the Jets? They will probably reach out to Antonio Cromartie and Braylon Edwards and try to work deals out with them. But after the Jets public love affair with Nnamdi, will they even want to come back?
We’ll find out in the next few days.
The Steelers released tackle Max Starks earlier in the afternoon, so it was apparent they were going to bring back Willie Colon. Colon, projected as the Steelers starting right tackle, wore Chad Ochocinco Patriots Jersey and signed a five-year contract worth $29 million, according to NFL Network’s Jason LaCanfora. Big Ben must be extremely happy, knowing that Colon is back to protect the right side of the Steelers’ line, a position where he has started 50 games during his pro career in the Steel City. The Bronx native was selected in the fourth round of the 2006 draft and is recovering from a torn Achilles tendon, an injury which sidelined him all of last season.
