Jets Officially Release WR Jerricho Cotchery

The Jets as expected have announced the release of veteran wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery.

A respected veteran who has been with the club since being chosen with the 108th overall pick of the 2004 NFL Draft, Cotchery caught 358 passes for 4,514 yards and 18 touchdowns during his seven seasons with Gang Green. Cotchery had back-to-back 80-catch seasons in 2006 and 2007, topping 1,000-yards in the second of those two seasons.

Releasing Cotchery clears $1.8 million in base salary and salary cap space, which may be enough to sign veteran Derrick Mason, who reportedly visited the club on Thursday.

Cotchery played his college ball at North Carolina State and could draw interest from the Carolina Panthers and San Diego Chargers, where his former college quarterback, Phillip Rivers, could lobby general manager A.J. Smith to sign the 29-year-old wideout.
