Week One Preview: Buffalo at New York Jets

By John Touhey

Coming in to week one both teams have something to prove. The visiting Buffalo Bills were a favorite in the AFC East this time last year, but began to fade after home loss to, you guessed it, the New York Jets. That loss at “The Ralph” snowballed into a seven game slide with the Bills being outscored 100-224 including a second loss to gang green.

The Bills finished last in the East with a division record of 1-5. Likewise, the Jets were also favorites in the AFC as they were coming off back to back AFC championship game appearances. The Jets also started out strong with an impressive win over the Dallas Cowboys and a rout over Jacksonville. After making a mark against the Kansas City Chiefs 37-10 in week 14, the Jets lost their last three games, finishing 8-8 and missing the playoffs for the first time in the Rex Ryan era.

With a revamped offense under Tony Sparano and Mark Sanchez finally experiencing some adversity, the Jets will be looking for blood come Sunday.

As long as that right side of the offense line can neutralize Mario Williams the play action pass will be as effective as always. With Sparano as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins last year he coached his team to 30 plus points in both games against the Bills and I expect Sparano to be able to deliver similar results with the Jets.

Dustin Keller is a huge mismatch especially in the red zone and must be utilized in this game as well as all season. The defense will have its way with the Bills’ receivers which will allow the young pass rushers to find their way to Ryan Fitzpatrick.

My gut tells me there will be at least one defense touchdown with the Jets ahead for a majority of the game. All this comes down to my (first ever so don’t hate) prediction….Jets 24 Bills 10 in a game that shows the Jets’ true colors. (Aside from green and white that is).
