Bilal Powell will Start at RB

The Jets announced Thursday that third year running back Bilal Powell will start at running back against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

“I’m blessed and grateful,” Powell said. “Just shows my hard work that I put on it didn’t go unnoticed. It’s just an honor to see the offensive coaching staff and this team has confidence in me to name me a starter.”

The Jets signed two running backs in the off-season, Chris Ivory and Mike Goodson, to take over the running duties in Marty Mornhinweg’s offense. But both players were absent for the majority of training camp; Ivory was sidelined with a hamstring injury, and Goodson battled with legal issues stemming from a May arrest on drugs and weapons charges. Powell stayed positive throughout the off-season changes, and carried the load for the Jets during training camp.

“I try not to worry about stuff I can’t control,” Powell said Thursday. “I can’t control who they bring in and out of here. My biggest thing was just to focus every day and go out and play as hard as I could and play to the best of my abilities every day.”

Although Powell will start the game, the Jets will also give a share of the carries to Chris Ivory. There is no doubt that Ivory is the long term solution for the Jets, but Powell has earned the right to be the starter in the opening game.
