Jets head coach Todd Bowles made the move after another awful outing for Ryan Fitzpatrick during the 28-3 Monday night loss to the Cardinals in Arizona.
Bowels gave Fitz a vote of confidence after the 25-point loss, but decided after speaking to coaches to make the move to Geno Smith, a former Jets second-round pick.
Smith went 4 of 6 passes for 31 yards and an interception in mop up time during the loss to the Cardinals.
In 32 games (29 starts), Smith has thrown 27 touchdowns with 36 interceptions. The Jets are 1-5 on the season after missing the playoffs by a game last season with a loss to the Bills in the final game of the season.
